    A Terrible Injustice 2.0 Empty A Terrible Injustice 2.0

Post  Akari Fri Jul 03, 2009 8:50 am

I'm posting here because I want to direct the attention to a small group within the ranks of Where Murlocs Dare who rarely get the appreciation they deserve.

Usually after a difficult fight, you hear the comments: "Awesome DPS murlocs!" or "Great work Oracles!" But there's couple of murlocs who don't get the post-fight approval as often as I think they should.

I am ofcourse refering to our shieldwearing, heavy armored, damage taking murloc tanks!

It's hard to measure tank performance on meters like we do with DPS and healing. Therefore, it may not be as easy to tell whether tanks are doing a good job or not.

However, last night I tried to watch what the tanks were doing instead of paying attention to what I was doing (whenever I had the opportunity), and it's amazing how aware you guys always are of the situation. I'm talking about the Iron Council tanking, Gimi's Hodir tanking and the combined effort of Gimi and Cardinal at Thorim. And ofcourse the trash pulls as well.

What I want to do is say, that I think we in WMD have some of the best tanks and I want to commend them on (and this doesn't get said enough) an always excellent performance! I couldn't do what you do! Wink

    Tanks for being awesome!

    Yes, I went there.

But on a more serious note, yes, we do have some very good tanks in WMD, and they don't get thanked enough Smile.

I took a deep breath before opening this thread, I thought it was going to be some big drama after seeing the title! Very Happy

Anyway, thank you very much Akari. You have put the icing on a very nice day I'm having today.

I've always thought that the best way to rate WMD's tanks is to go and do a raid with someone else!

I'll add my own praise to this love-in and say Gimi is the king of off-tanks. His strengths are pace, threat, and tactics. He always comes up new suggestions after a wipe. I disagree on half the stuff he says, but that's the fun! Smile

I think my strengths are staying alive, and my weakness is probably multi-tasking and threat. I specialise in main tanking where survival is king, so my threat will never be amazing - but it's good enough!

And high praise to Blobb too, who as I told recently, should think good of himself as he's the third tank one of the best raid groups on the server, and always has a great spirit and picks up new tactics in a flash.

No, I dont agree. It is not that they dont get the approval. When Marveen hugs the Oracles is because we surprised her with our performance. When we clap the coastrunners is because by a miracle they saved us some precious seconds and enabled us to heal the raid. But.. our tanks? Not performing the best? Not being the cornerstones of our raid? Not doing everything and then some? nay.. not OUR tanks. How admiration can be shown best if not by being sure the other will perform outstanding?

My target in murlocs is to come a day when the oracles will save the raid, kill the boss, beat 3 achievements and the only reply will be "Has the f@$#%ng sword dropped at last?"

Until then, pls, keep up the praise Very Happy

Well Zuzuna, I kind of see your point and I respect it as well. But my psychologically way of thinking won't accept it. Smile

The way I understand what it, you're saying that: "By not showing appreciation, the tanks automatically assume that they always perform their best. If we were showing appreciation, it would mean that our tanks were only doing their best on that particular occasion and not always."

While I understand this argument, I must say that I strongly disagree. I'm not saying that you should change your mind, but I just want to express my opinion on the subject.

(In the following: When I say 'you', I don't mean you Zuzuna, but people in general. A flaw in the English language in my opinion.)

Unless a person suffers from a severe psychologically disorder, by nature human beings want to exist or feel that they exist, feel alive. A central way to do this is by knowing that you 'exist' in another persons mind, that someone else remembers you. Other ways could be having an impact on history or change and alter history, and by knowing that you contribute something valuable to a community.

When someone tells me that I did a good job on a particular boss fight, whether it's on Ventrilo, in raid chat or on the forums afterwards, it makes me happy and feel all of the above. That someone chose to show their appreciation by saying the words "Good job!", I don't believe that anyone doesn't like that. Okay, maybe I'm not altering history but if my efforts (combined with the rest of the raid) ensured a new bosskill, then isn't that some sort of history being made?

This is the reason why I decided to create this thread. I didn't believe that the tanks get the necessary appreciation required by human beings. If you don't verbalize or vocalize your appreciation of others' efforts, you're basically telling them that their efforts don't matter. If they did matter, surely you would have told them so? And if their efforts don't matter, the memory of them must be very minimal. And if you don't remember them, and their efforts don't matter, how could they contribute anything to the community? As a result, you don't get that happy feeling inside you that you would otherwise get if someone told you that what you did was important.

This is psychological theory and no one thinks these thoughts through. Therefore, it may be difficult to identify with it. But that doesn't mean it's not true, most of it is present in every person's subconscious.
Additionally, this is not necessarily applicable in every scenario. Cardinal, obviously, knows that his efforts contribute to the community, being the leader and all.

    Still. Food for thought.

I know that I contribute, not always that's it's appreciated, but that's fine.

Leading WMD is a lot of fun. Cool
